Derbyshire county councillors have pledged to help those affected by the closure of Courtaulds UK Ltd which manufactured garments at their West Mill site in Belper.
320 workers have been made redundant as a result of the closure but the council are working alongside other partners to help the workers and their families get access to the help they need to find alternative employment.
John Owen, Councillor for Belper, said: “The news that Courtaulds is closing is a huge blow for the workforce and the Town. Everyone in Belper knows someone who worked for Courtaulds or a business associated with it.
“Our immediate priority is to ensure employees have the right access to benefits and support. Our welfare rights team will go above and beyond to make sure this happens.
“These workers will also get support if they need it through local food banks and jobs fairs that we are setting up in partnership with Job Centre Plus. We are committed to supporting the community through this challenging time.”
